Hello everyone! I am your political chair for the 2018-2019 academic school year, and I would really appreciate your attention towards the workers fighting for fair working conditions at the Nutriasia company in Bulacan.
Just until 2017, NutriAsia required their employees to work up to 20 hours straight. It only stopped recently because there have been two incidents of employees who die in their sleep from exahustion.
In response, NutriAsia shortened their workdays to 8 hours a day, but have shortened the pay to about $0.89 an hour. The workers are often forced to match speeds of machines, and that leaves very little time, energy, and money for the families that these people provide for. There has been a 12 day strike organized by the workers against Nutriasia, with no support from local police. Police have confiscated their tents that shielded them in the pouring rains, and have attempted to block all media coverage to this area. Today, they have been met with bloody attacks after the police have broken in the picketline that they were required to stay at least 50 meters away from, in an attempt to disperse them.
A statement from the Anakbayan National Secretary General Einstein Recedes reads: “Violence is the fascist Duterte’s response to all forms of dissent and resistance, no matter how legitimate. Instead of addressing the just demands of workers for decent living wages and safe working conditions, he sends in his fascist police forces to arrest, injure, and maim unarmed and peaceful workers and students.”
Nutriasia is the company who makes products like Mang Tomas, UFC ketchup, Datu Puti Soy Sauce and Vinegar, and many more popular Filipino condiments. As Filipinos residing in America, we can support these workers by boycotting these products until Nutriasia agrees to improve workers conditions.
This is not the only instance of filipino workers taken advantage of. I encourage everyone to leave their thoughts on this situation in the comments!
